The legality of betting on sports is still a matter of debate but a few states have started to allow the activity. In Iowa the state, betting on sports is legal since the year 2019 (both in retail and online). The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission regulates the industry and charges a licensing fee to the online operator. In Michigan sports betting is legal both online and in casinos that are retail. The program was launched in three casinos in March 2020, a month before the Coronavirus pandemic. Mississippi also has a hand in the world of sports betting, but hasn’t fully embraced mobile wagering.

The repeal of PASPA created a wave in legislative and business momentum. As of late, four major American sports leagues have formed partnerships with operators of sports betting. Some have even launched official sports betting channels. Nevada is a notable example. In the past, payouts for sports betting were based on the results. PASPA has prohibited both in-person and online betting, with the exception of Nevada.
